Raw milk has been a hot topic in the food world lately with many people saying it’s the best thing out there and others saying it will kill you with one sip. What is the real deal about raw milk? Read on.
Raw milk is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: milk that goes from the cow to the consumer with no processing at all. The reason this is so scary is because milk goes through pasteurization to kill germs before it consumed.
Raw milk that goes straight from cow to consumer is much different from milk that is processed. There are strict standards that must be met for a farm to be able to produce this. For example:
Farms are regularly tested by state agencies
There is no mixing of milk from different sources
All cows must be checked regularly by a veterinarian, are tested for tuberculosis and are free of disease.
Cows are kept very clean are grass fed
Farmers who produce raw milk are required to hold special liability insurance
The milk is not allowed to cross state lines, per the FDA
What are the benefits of raw milk?
Raw milk is a whole and completely unprocessed food, just as a tomato would be. It is full of heart healthy fats and protein and loaded with vitamins and minerals as well. It was thought to be used as medicine in the middle ages and even has medicinal properties. It has also been shown to be good for those that are lactose intolerant as well.
You can’t cook with it, and it will last 7-10 days under proper refrigeration, and like organic milk or any specialty product will cost more then conventional milk.

Should you drink raw milk? Only you can answer that question. I personally don’t drink enough milk for it to make a difference, but I would certainly try it. If you are leery about germs or getting sick or don’t want to go to the trouble, it’s probably not for you. If you care about health and being up on the trends then it is definitely worth sourcing out. Either way, the choice is up to you, but you should do your own thorough research before making any decisions.
Have you ever had raw milk? If so, what did you think? Would you drink it? Why or why not? Thoughts please!
